Tahajjud Prayer

Tahajjud Prayer

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) mentioned that Salah is the 2nd pillar of Islam and it is obligatory on every Muslim to offer Salah five times a day. Salah is one of the most important parts of every Muslim’s life.  It is of two types: first is the obligatory Namaz, which is to be offered five times a day at specific times with no choice of skipping it under normal circumstances, while second is the Nafl (extravagant prayer) which is optional and one is not answerable to the Almighty for not performing it.
Tahajjud namaz is one of the non-obligatory prayers which one should pray in the later part of the night after getting some sleep.
 “And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.” (Quran, 17: 79)
From the above-mentioned verse, we can conclude that tahajjud namaz which is performed during night time will result in finding a blessed rank on the Day of Judgment. And surely this prayer will be tahajjud namaz which offers in the later part of the night.

Importance of Tahajjud Prayer

Tahajjud means to abandon sleep so that you can pray Salah. There are Numbers of Hadith and verses emphasize the significance of invoking Allah Almighty by solicitation and prayers in the darkest nights.
“The Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven when one-third of the night remains and says: ‘Who will call upon Me, that I may answer Him? Who will ask of Me, that I may give him? Who will seek My forgiveness that I may forgive him?’” (Bukhari, Muslim)
Highly rewarding tahajjud prayer

Abu Hurayra narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “The very best prayer after the compulsory prayers is the night time prayer.”(Muslim)
Tahajjud prayer usually is done by alone without together. Tahajjud prayer is not limited in number, but at least two Rakah. As Prophet Muhammad (SAW) explained that: “Evening prayer that two-two.” (Bukhari)

Time of Tahajjud Prayer

Tahajjud prayer may be performed in the early part of the night, the middle part of the night, or the later part of the night, but after the obligatory Isha prayer. Tahajjud prayer can be performed whenever in the night unless the doer time for sleep. But the best time to perform is 1/3 of the night after waking up from sleep.  Actually, the time to perform Tahajjud prayer is since the specified Isha until dawn (all night) after getting up from sleep. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has told his followers:
Abu Muslim asked Abu Zhar: “Which late-night prayer is the best?” He said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah the same that you asked me and he said, ‘The (one done during) middle of the latter half of the night, and very few do it.’” (Ahmad)
It can’t be offered straight away after Isha, yet just after one`s rest, neither when the time is close to Fajr.

Conditions of offering Tahajjud Prayer

  1. Make an intention of performing Tahajjud prayer and rearrange to wake up finally a piece of the night.
  2. Make sure to perform Wudu as one should perform before every tahajjud namaz.
  3. Move to a clean and quiet place in the house being away from distractions.
  4. Offer at least two Raka`ts up to 12, depending on one`s willpower.
  5. Don’t forget to supplicate to Allah SWT for one`s just and rightful requests in order to get benefited from this exceedingly rewarding hour of darkness.

Benefits of Tahajjud Prayer

Following benefits one could get by offering Tahajjud prayer:
  • It gives inner strength
  • It gives mental toughness
  • Seek forgiveness and surely Allah will listen
  •  The doors of Mercy and Forgiveness are open during the last 1/3 of night
  • If someone wishes his/her Dua to be accepted this is the best time to ask
  • Huge incentive for the believer to wake up when everyone else is asleep and remember Allah (SWT) alone
  •  Tahajjud prayer can strengthen religious understanding
  • It can bring fresh inspiration and innovation
  • Tahajjud prayer can delete wickedness and prevent act of sin
  • Tahajjud prayer can strengthen the memory

Conclusion

Tahajjud prayer is one of the best among non-obligatory prayers, it is the cause of getting Allah`s great Blessings and Mercy. As stated in Hadith
“The Messenger of Allah ordered us to pray during the night, a little or a lot, and to make the last of the Prayer the Witar Prayer.” [At-Tabarani]
We all should make a practice to offer this tahajjud namaz so that we can come more and more close to Almighty Allah.

THREE STAGES TO TAHAJJUD

One of the most virtuous of the nawafil acts of worship is waking up in the middle of the night for tahajjud prayer.  This is that special time when the doors of mercy are thrown open and the angels are dispersed, seeking out those in need of their Lord. Yet, how unfortunate our situation is that we are deprived from this great bounty.
“Their sides shun their beds in order to pray to their Lord in fear and hope…”(Quran, 32: 16)
Abu Hurayrah (radiallahu anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said,“The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.” (Muslim)
I remember anytime one of the narrations regarding tahajjud would come up in a text, or was mentioned by one of our teachers, the students would eagerly ask how they could become regular in this blessed act. Here are a few suggestions based on their responses.
Stage 1 – I just can’t wake up
Despite your best efforts (asking a friend to call, multiple alarms, sleeping early, making a firm intention at night, etc.) if you simply cannot force yourself to get up, pray your tahajjud prayer before you go to sleep.  Its time technically begins after Isha, so this can be a means of showing Allah that you are serious, and truly desirous of this great bounty. Couple this with dua admitting your inability and asking Allah for His bounty.
Stage 2 – I am sporadic in my tahajjud
If you are blessed to wake up for tahajjud on occasion, or get up most days, but miss a few here and there, be sure to “make-up” the prayer on the days that you don’t get up.  And of course couple this with dua.
Umar (radiallahu anhu) narrates that“I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) say,
‘Whenever one of you sleeps through his night devotions, or through a part of them, then, if you perform them between the Fajr (i.e after Ishraq) and Dhuhr prayer, you will receive the same reward as if you performed them at night.’” (Muslim)
Stage 3 – I regularly wake up for tahajjud
Alhamdulillah, if you are at this stage you need to ensure 3 things:
1. Give shukr every night that Allah allowed you take advantage of this great blessing.
2. Admit to Allah that while you are unworthy of such a blessing, you are in need of it.
3. Beg Allah that He allow you to wake up the following night as well.
May Allah, Most High, allow each of us to be regular in our tahajjud prayers!

Rules of Tahajjud Prayer

What is Tahajjud Prayer in Islam?

Prophet Muh’mmad SallALLAHU Alayhe Wasallam said:  The best salat after the ones which are made obligatory is Tahajjud Salat. [Ahmad]

 It is reported that the Prophet PBUH said : ‘When the last one-third of the night remains, our Lord, the Glorious One descends towards the heaven of the earth and proclaims: Who is that who supplicates for Me, and I grant his supplication? Who is that who begs Me for anything and I grant it to him? And who is that who seeks My forgiveness, and I forgive him?’ (Bukhari, Muslim).

Tahajjud’s literally means ‘wake up’ and due to, it is offered at mid night (After Isha and before Fajr Prayer), it is necessary to have a deep sleep before offering Tahajjud, which is the fundamental issue to be taken as start. Tahajjud Prayer is not compulsory on Muslims, i.e. infact Tahajjud is an voluntary prayer (Namaz).

How to Wake up for Tahajjud Prayer?

A person remarked to Abdullah bin Abbas [Radhi ALLAHU Anhu],“I always intend awakening in the last portion of the night to perform Salaat but sleep overpowers me.

” Ibne Abbas [Radhi ALLAHU anhu] replied,

“Before sleeping recite from “Qul Law Kaanal Bahru Midadal…” to the end of Surah Kahf. ALLAH Ta’ala will waken you at whatever time you intend rising.” [Tha'labi-Ma'ariful Quraan vol 5]

Method to perform Tahajjud Prayer (Night Prayer)

from The Sunnah of Prophet Muh’mmad SallALLAHU Alayhe Wasallam

    First of all, make sure that you had a deep sleep after Ishah prayer and wake up before Fajr prayer so that you could be able to perform Tahajjud prayer before fajr. Remember, you cannot pray Tahajjud in obligatory prayer times, i.e. during Ishah time and Fajr time. The time of praying Tahajjud Must be offered between Ishah and Fajr, i.e. at midnight or 3rdhalf of the night.
    Perform Wudu
    Now, be prepared mentally to perform Tahajjud prayer by making intention to perform it with pure mind and pure intention. So perform two Raka’hs (Rakaats) prayer in a same manner you pray Fajr prayer, the only thing different is your intention for Tahajjud prayer. Finally, finish the prayer with the salam. Make a dua whatever you want to do but in beautiful and pure words and ask ALLAH Subhana Wa Ta’ala Subhanahu Wata A’la. Your desire should be legitimate. It would more good if you can cry and show your tears to ALLAH Subhana Wa Ta’ala Subhanahu Wata A’la from the core of your heart.
    Step by step in short:I. Sleep after Ishah at any time;II. Woke up at midnight early before Fajr;

    III. Prepare to pray Tahajjud before Fajr time starts;

    IV. Perform Wudu;

    V. Find a clean place;

    VI. Take a direction to Kaba;

    VII. Start offering two Rakahs of Tahajjud;

    VIII. Finish the prayer with a salam; and

    IX. Make a dua, recommended.

Rules of Tahajjud Prayer

    The minimal night Tahajjud prayer is 2 raka’ahs. [Hindiyya, quoting Fath al-Qadir];
    The number of raka’ahs performed by Nabi [SallALLAHU Alaihe Wasallam] varied according to the prevailing circumstances. Although on certain occasions sufficient time was available, Nabi [SallALLAHU Alaihe Wasallam] would perform less raka’ahs reciting lengthy Qiraat.[Khasa'ile Nabawee p 156]. Deducing from the various narrations four to twelve raka’ahs in units of two or four have been recommended. [Imdaadul Fatawa vol 1 -Baab finnawaafil / Maraqiyul Falah], However if two raka’ahs are performed in the prescribed time it will be regarded as Tahajjud.[Raddul Mukhtaar vol 1 p 715].
    Tahajjud is a nifl prayer, you would make the intention that you are going to pray Tahajjud two raka’ah and you are going to perform this prayer normally the way you would usually do in any two raka’ah of prayer.
    There is no prescribed verses to recite for Tahajjud Prayer. You can recite any verse from the Holy Quran for Tahajjud Prayer.

Five (5) Benefits of Tahajjud Prayer

Based on Chapter 7 in  Du’a; The Weapon of the Believer by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi

    ALLAH Zille Shanahu describes the true believers as those who: ‘…and, in the hours of dawn, they seek forgiveness from their Lord…’  Surah Al-Dhariyat, Ayah 18.

    The distinction between a believer and one who is just a Muslim is further defined by this act.
    The doors of Mercy and Forgiveness are open during the last 1/3 of night:

    Proof: Hadeeth

    Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet (Ppeace and Blessings of ALLAH Zille Shanahu Be Upon Him) said:

    Our Lord descends every night, during the last third of it, to the skies of this world, and asks: ‘Who is making du’aa to me, so that I can respond to him?  Who is asking Me, so that I can give him?  Who is asking for My forgiveness, so that I can forgive him?’

    Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim from Abu Hurayrah

    If a person wishes his/her Du’aa to be accepted this is the best time to ask as shown in hadeeth above.

    Huge incentive for the believer to wake up when everyone else is asleep and remember ALLAH Zille Shanahu privately.

    ALLAH Zille Shanahu favored this time over other times and ALLAH Zille Shanahu distinguised this timing so that the worshipper can eagerly anticipate this time and pray earnestly and sincerely; The worshipper should ensure his/her du’aa is more frequent and sincere during these times.

What ALLAH Subhanahu Wata A’ala Says About Tahajjud Prayers in The Quran-e-Kareem

ALLAH Ta’ala says, addressing Nabi [SallALLAHU Alaihe Wasallam],

“O you wrapped in a cloth, Stand [in prayer] by night except a portion, half of it or a little less, or a little more, and recite the Quraan in measured tones. Soon shall we send down to you a weighty message. Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing the soul, and most effective in speech [of praises and prayer]. [73:1-6]

In an Ayah, ALLAH Zille Shanahu says,

“[The believers are those] whose sides remain away from their beds, while they call on their Lord with fear and hope. ” [32:16]

In another Ayah, ALLAH Ta’ala says,

“And spend a portion of the night with the Quraan, as an additional prayer.” [17:79]

In another Ayah, ALLAH Ta’ala says,

“As for the Righteous, they will be in the Gardens and fountains [of Jannah], with joy the rewards which their Lord gives them, before this [in the world] they were virtuous. They slept but little at night, and they prayed for forgiveness in the hours of early dawn. ” [51:15:18]

Another Wazifa for Laziness and Tiredness

In Urdu & English:

The Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) used to make a du’a:

Transliteration: ALLAHUMMA INNI A’UZU BIKA MINAL HAMMI WAL HAZANI, WA A’UZU BIKA MINAL AJZI WAL KASALI, WA’A UZU BIKA MINAL JUBNI WAL BUKHLI,  WA A’UZU BIKA MIN GALABATIDDAINI WA QAHRIRRIJALI

Narrated Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him):

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say, “O Allah! I seek refuge with You from helplessness, laziness, cowardice and feeble old age; I seek refuge with You from afflictions of life and death and seek refuge with You from the punishment in the grave.” Sahih al-Bukhari

Why is this du’a important? For two reasons:

    Laziness is an attribute of munafiqeen. If this wasn’t bad enough, being lazy leads to procrastination, which leads to its own set of problems.
    It’s common these days for people to say “I can’t do it.” Like “I can’t pray at work,” or “I can’t achieve X.” The Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) would say a’oothubillah to that kind of talk. Think about it!
